"Farmer Dave's Song" was recorded in April 1996 at Sound Works Audio Productions as part of the project "Someone's Been Sleeping in My Tent." Using a combination of MIDI and live instruments and vocals, the feel of the original composition was captured and updated. Pat Colgan, Engineer ExtraordinaireThe Engineer was Pat Colgan, owner of Sound Works, and he also collaborated on the effort, playing MIDI keyboard, flute countermelody,  and drums. Also playing keyboard, bass, strings and creating the original MIDI file was Daena Creel. The song was sequenced in Cakewalk Professional 3.0 using a Roland JV-90 keyboard. This sequence was then dumped via MIDI into Sound Works' Mac Master Tracks Pro, and linked via MIDI time code. While the drums were played entirely from the JV-90 keys, an Alesis R16 Drum machine provided the sounds heard in the recording. Trumpets were added using Pat's huge Kurzweil keyboard. I played a twelve-string acoustic guitar borrowed from Coffey Music in Westminster, MD. I had sold my original twelve-string Suzuki many years prior, and they were good enough to loan me one for the project.

I supplied the lead vocals, and three-part backups were provided entirely by my wife, Daena, recorded on multiple tracks. Studio mic for the vocals was the AKG 414 ULS. Reverb and delay effects processing was handled by the Lexicon LXP 1 and Lexicon LXP 5 processors, and Yamaha ISPX90 II. A Dynamite compressor was also applied to the vocals.

The mixing console was the Mackie 8 Bus 32, and monitoring was done with Yamaha S-10 speakers powered by a Tascam 20 watt per channel stereo amp. Seven tracks were recorded to a Tascam DA-20 DAT machine, with the final mix processed via a Symatrix 525 compressor. The tracks were then mixed to a DAT master.
